20 MINING & TECHNOLOGY AUSTRALIA 2014 | ISSUE 8 Cairns is ideally suited to service projects across northern Australia and in to PNG – we're by far the closest major airport and population base, we have a workforce that is used to working in the tropical environment, and we have a greater empathy with our tropical neighbours than the southern capitals could ever hope to have. Despite our reputation as being just a tourist town, albeit with many domestic and international connections, notable is that Cairns also has connections to some 15 mine sites or regions, including three to the Territory, several into regional Queensland and a handful into PNG. These connections have created opportunities for a range of supply and servicing capabilities out of Cairns. Cairns' connections to resource regions Cairns has access to a great range of sites with prospects for employment across the full spectrum of skills. The challenge is developing that experience base, and building the relationship between the region and the resources sector is vital. In research undertaken by Cummings Economics, it was identifed that the number of Fly In-Fly Out workers living in the region will soon reach 2,600, up 500 in three years, as the Cairns region consolidates its position as an alternative FIFO hub to the southeast. The FIFO workers commuting from Cairns Airport to mine sites across northern Australia, PNG and Indonesia, plus a further 1,800 residential mine workers in Far North Queensland, bring home approximately $330 million in wages each year, most of which will be spent in the region. The Cairns region has had a long association with the resources sector, and with around 4,400 FIFO and residential mine workers currently based in the region, there is plenty of talent out there. The Cairns FIFO Project now evolves into a new phase, with Advance Cairns continuing the initiative. With a number of specialist contractors based in the region who have captured a niche in the resources sector, Advance Cairns is expanding the brief to include UPFRONT
