MINING & TECHNOLOGY AUSTRALIA 2014 | ISSUE 8 21 other supply and servicing capability that can be requisitioned from the Cairns region that complements the FIFO skill set. With growth still occurring in our own region, across the Territory, up into PNG, Asia and the Pacifc, the Cairns region will continue to keep building relationships with the resources sector. The drawn out spectacle of the FIFO Inquiry which culminated in the report titled Cancer in the bush or salvation for our cities was, ironically, probably the salvation for the debate – it simply went on too long, and did too little to provide solutions for the sector, for anyone to really do too much about it. The emotion in its title was misguided, and its content had little substance to support the notion that FIFO was the cancer it was purported to be. Rather, it was the debate that was cancerous and it was allowed to spread unfetered. I'd like to think that the cancer of the debate is in remission. Let's put our diferences behind us, and work together to fnd ways of geting mutually benefcial outcomes, both for remote communities and regions like Cairns, and heaven forbid, the resources sector. In the spirit of cooperation, I welcome all ideas about how to realistically maximise local content within remote communities, while at the same time ensuring the skilled workforce can be employed so we can get on with the business making production viable in the long- term as well as bringing in new projects on time and on budget. Now that would be healthy! Jeremy Blockey is a business consultant based in Cairns. He was employed in the role of Cairns FIFO Co- ordinator in a contract funded by the Commonwealth Government from November 2011 to August 2013.
