4 MINING & TECHNOLOGY AUSTRALIA 2014 | ISSUE 8 THE NORTHERN TERRITORY GOVERNMENT HAS A number of initiatives in place to ensure our jurisdiction is the most atractive and safe, and which quite possibly has the most user-friendly regulatory environment in which to do business, for mining and exploration companies. As the Northern Territory's Mines and Energy Minister, I launched a new pre-competitive geoscience initiative designed to stimulate mineral and petroleum exploration, called Creating Opportunities for Resource Exploration, or CORE. CORE will deliver new geoscience and exploration stimulus programs to accelerate our next generation of minerals and petroleum discoveries. So far initiatives under CORE have included new programs by my department's Geological Survey team to assess the gas and minerals potential of the Territory's sedimentary basins, and surveys that will cover over 10 percent of the Territory with high resolution gravity data to assist exploration. The Northern Territory Government also co-funds selected exploration drilling and geophysical programs in areas that have seen limited past activity, and aims to improve service to the exploration industry by making open fle company exploration reports available online. And in recognition of the many emerging energy industries, upstream and downstream, currently underway in the Northern Territory, an Energy Directorate has now been established within my Department of Mines and Energy. This Directorate will inform Government on opportunities and priorities in developing future energy policy for the NT. My department's Geological Survey team has also released the Geology and Mineral Resources of the NT. This is the frst ever volume to comprehensively describe the geology, mineral and petroleum resources of the entire Northern Territory. This 1100 page volume contains 42 chapters describing each geological province and basin in the Territory. The volume is designed to be a defnitive reference for mineral and petroleum explorers. It includes descriptions of every named geological unit in the Territory, as well as all signifcant mineral deposits and petroleum felds, along with reviews of endowment for each commodity and a summary of the Territory's geological history. This new source of information, combined with new developments in online accessibility of information such as company reports, will be an essential reference for all explorers with an interest in the Territory. The Northern Territory Government recognises that foreign investment in our resources sector is absolutely vital to provide the necessary capital to fund large-scale exploration and mining developments. As such, we support programs to assist explorers in atracting investment from key markets such as China, Japan, Korea and North America. While downstream gas processing is already a tremendously important industry for the Territory economy, with our capital Darwin becoming one of Australia's leading LNG hubs; onshore exploration of the Territory's petroleum resources is also experiencing unprecedented growth with the recognition of the vast potential of onshore regions of the Territory for unconventional petroleum such as shale oil and shale gas. The Territory Government is commited to supporting the mining and energy sectors which in turn will serve to increase the future prosperity and development of the Territory. The Northern Territory is open for business; and my government is commited to making the Territory one of the best regions in the world in which to invest and do business. FOREWORD CORE initiatives to encourage exploration Willem Westra van Holthe represents the electorate of Katherine in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, having been elected at the 2008 election. Willem grew up in Brisbane with his Dutch father and Australian mother. He moved to the Territory in 1984, working as a Police Officer at Ma- ranboy then at Mataranka as the Police Officer in Charge. After eight years at Alice Springs, which included five years in Nor- force, Willem moved back to Katherine – a region that he loves. He and his wife ran a small business and became involved in the Katherine Region Tourist Association, promoting Katherine as a tour- ist destination. Working as a Police Officer, owning a business and being on Kather- ine's peak Tourism body has given Willem exposure to a wide range of issues that affect Katherine. Willem is the Minister for: Primary Industry and Fisheries, Mines and Energy, Land Resource Management, and Essential Services. He is married to Jennie and together they have three sons. Minister Westra van Holthe holds the portfolios of: • Mines and Energy • Primary Industry and Fisheries • Land Resource Management • Essential Services
