MINING & TECHNOLOGY AUSTRALIA 2014 | ISSUE 8 7 While South Australia will face production competition from Queensland, the Northern Territory and West Australia, the state's head start combined with a more-developed infrastructure through existing pipelines, especially to NSW markets, are likely to help it stay ahead in the short to medium term. The fact that the Cooper Basin is also remote from population centres means it's unlikely to face the same sorts of intense 'social licence to operate' pressures that have greeted CSG developments in the eastern states and possibly the potentially bigger gas felds in the Perth Basin in West Australia. The South Australian Government is also making its backing crystal clear, a move that could also keep the state ahead of some of its competitors. It has produced an Unconventional Gas Roadmap to help guide development, and then set up the Mining Industry Participation Ofce to support the fedgling industry through beter infrastructure, while commiting to building the service, training and supply chains that will be crucial to geting the gas out as cost efciently as possible. What happens in the Cooper is also increasingly taking on an urgent national focus. According to professional services firm Deloitte, the economic benefits of the emerging LNG export market could be lost if the domestic market fails to supply gas in a quantity and at a price that maintains our economic competitiveness. Increasing competition for the Asian gas markets by the US shale industry, where gas can currently be produced for 30 percent less than here due to lower labour and construction costs, has many in the resources and financial markets saying the South Australian industry seems to be the best hope for Australia's push to be a major player in the world gas market.
